James T. Harris, a popular radio talk show host in Milwaukee, has been awash in hate mail from the black community because of his support for John McCain. Harris, like Obama, doesn't look like those other presidents on the dollar bills.
His fellow blacks have called him a traitor to his race, a boot-licker and -- one of the favorite reoccurring phrases -- Black Sambo. ("Little Black Sambo" was one of my favorite books as a child. My take was that Sambo was a mighty clever kid when he outwitted the tigers, who subsequently turned into golden butter. Man, would I love a big stack of pancakes right now, smothered in hot butter and maple syrup)
Oops, sorry -- I got off topic.
Now...when a white man comes out for Barack Obama there is no similar hate reaction from the white community. Clearly, America's whites have bothered to become politically correct while many blacks have yet to return the favor.
The whole point of improving race relations, the endgame all intelligent people seek, is that everyone is eventually measured on merit alone. It should work like this:
When I was eight years old I put together a softball team in the neighborhood to compete in Little League. Our pitcher was lousy and I was telling him so when a kid who'd been watching from the sidelines piped up: "Hey, I can pitch," he said. I hunkered down in my catcher's stance and tossed him a ball. "Show me," I said.
Bobby Thomas became out star pitcher and we went all the way to the city championship. But the first time my Dad came to one of our games he said to me afterward, "You never told me Bobby was a colored kid."
In all innocence I replied, "Why would I tell you that?"
Can the guy pitch?
That's the only question any of us -- black, white or brown -- should ever be asking.
